CARJACKING: A VERY REAL THREAT.
Security Precautions Shouldn't End When You Walk Out The Door.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department Press Release: September 18, at approximately 6:10 p.m., officers responded to the 4100 block of Perris Boulevard regarding a report of a carjacking that had just occurred. The victim said he drove into the parking lot at the location and exited his car. As soon as the victim got out of his car, the suspect got out of the passenger seat of a dark-colored sedan parked nearby. The suspect approached the victim, brandished a chrome handgun and demanded the victim’s car keys. The victim gave the suspect the keys and the suspect drove the car away.

Parking lots, shopping centers, gas stations, car washes, convenience stores, ATMs, and hotels are all prime carjacking locations. Keep in mind that close proximity to a freeway onramp is also a desirable escape factor from the carjackers prospective. Also, a roadway intersection with a stoplight offers a carjacker an opportunity to jump out of another vehicle, and pull open your unlocked driver’s door. Carjackers rely on the element of surprise. Most victims say they never saw the carjacker until he appeared at the car door. Whether you’re at a gas station, at a drive-up ATM, in the parking lot at work or at the mall, or even in front of your house, you are at risk. Here are some common sense things you can do to significantly reduce your chances of becoming a carjacking victim:

IN THE PARKING LOT:
  • NEVER park in isolated areas or near walls or heavy foliage
  • ALWAYS park in well-lighted, high activity areas, especially if you arrive or leave after dark
  • ALWAYS pay attention to persons sitting in cars, as you arrive and when you walk to your car
  • ALWAYS roll up the windows and lock the car, even in front of your house … even in the church parking lot.
  • Use valet parking or an attended garage, if available
  • Ask for a security escort if you are alone at a shopping center
  • Watch out for young males loitering in the area (handing out flyers, etc)
  • If someone tries to approach, change direction or run to a busy store
  • Follow your instincts; when you have that "gut feeling" you need to get to a busy or safer place
  • As you are approaching your vehicle, look under, around, and inside your car
  • Be aware of your surroundings while loading packages into the car
  • If it's safe, open the door, enter quickly, and lock the doors immediately
  • Don't loiter after entering your car: Get in, lock the doors, fasten your safety belt, and leave.
    WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING:
  • NEVER leave your car running and unattended, or with the keys in the ignition, even at home, even "just to run back in the house to get ..."
  • In the city, always drive with your car doors locked and windows rolled up
  • When stopped in traffic, leave room ahead to maneuver and escape, if necessary
  • If you are bumped in traffic, be suspicious of the accident, especially if it happens in a secluded area or near a freeway on ramp (which provides a quick escape route for the “bumper” and his accomplice). It could be a carjacker's attempt to get you to stop and get out of your car to discuss the damage.
  • Beware of the Good Samaritan who offers to repair your car or a flat tire, and drive to a gas station or busy place before getting out if at all possible. If not, stay in your car and call for roadway assistance. If you don't have a cell phone, ask the would-be helper to make that call for you.
IF YOU DO BECOME A VICTIM OF A CARJACKING ATTEMPT:

  • NEVER agree to be kidnapped; drop the cars keys and run and scream for help
  • NEVER RESIST if you are ever confronted by an armed carjacker; ALWAYS give up your keys or money without resistance.
