SECURITY SYSTEM ALERT: Have you recently switched your home phone lines to a new provider or format?

ARE YOU READY FOR A "SECURE" VACATION? Here are ten tips for making your home more secure while you're gone. As always, if you ever have a question about home security, you can count on your friends at CENTRAL SECURITY SERVICES, INC. to answer your questions or provide a "no charge" system review.
NOTE: Check with your police department and see if your community has a Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol. These groups can schedule regular drive-by inspections while you are gone.
1. PUT YOUR MAIL AND NEWSPAPER ON HOLD. Four or five newspapers in the driveway and that full mailbox is like posting a sign saying NOBODY'S HOME! COME AND GET IT! Don't forget that door slot, either; clear side lights or windows in the front door which allow a view of mail piling up on the floor is also an indicator there's nobody home. Don't tell the paper or post office WHY you want them to hold your service, though. You never know who's taking that information.
2. ANSWERING MACHINE MESSAGE: "We're busy right now and can't get to the phone." Your phone message should NEVER say that you are not home. Set the machine to answer in five rings, answering too soon indicates there's nobody home. Five rings could mean that you really can't get to the phone.
3. PUT YOUR LIGHTS ON A TIMER. Timers come in a wide variety of types and prices; from programmable, computerized models to a simple, inexpensive plug-in unit. Have two or three rooms equipped so the lights go on and off at various times. Leave the light over the stove on. The kitchen is the room which, in most home, has the lights on most often.
4. LEAVE A STEREO ON AND TUNED TO A TALK/NEWS STATION. People in a house make noise and noise means vibrations. Vibrations of music and conversation are different. By turning your stereo on a talk station instead of a music station it creates a more realistic impression that someone is home. The same effect is created by having a TV turn itself on in the afternoon and evening.
5. DRAPES & CURTAINS. If you leave them open be sure to remove expensive and inviting items from view from the outside.
6. PADLOCK GATES. It not only makes getting into the backyard more difficult, but it seriously hinders getting out while carrying items like stereos and computers. This added inconvenience is a strong deterrent to would be thieves.
7. HIRE A TRUSTED FAMILY MEMBER TO BE A CARETAKER. That freshly mowed lawn, trash cans set out and taken in, walks swept, and leaves raked all serve to disguise the fact that you're not home. Leave that person a key and a contact number where you can be reached.
8. MAKE SURE ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE LOCKED BEFORE YOU LEAVE. Make a circuit of your home to check that all windows and doors are secured and locked.
9. MAKE SURE YOUR ALARM IS ARMED. This is one of those things which should be obvious, but people often forget. It should go without saying that you should inform your security service provider that you are going to be away.
10. GET A FLOOR SAFE FOR JEWELRY AND OTHER VALUABLES. Include a photo collection of your possessions. A floor safe can easily be concealed by an area rug and shoes.
